This is Philopita, aka Loving Pie.
Here, as a Greek-American, nerdly Doctor of Food Science, Conscientious Investor, Hospitality Entrepreneur, Proud Father, and Husband living in Philadelphia, I philosophize about this insane world we’ve made for ourselves.
Allow me to Greek out a little bit on the notion of Love and Philos. The Greek word does not have a precise English equivalent, but it does form many of our English words. Philo-sophy is the study of our complex human interactions and place in the Universe. My hometown, Phila-delphia is referred to as the city of ‘Brotherly Love.,” adelphos meaning brother. Without the qualifier, ‘neighborly love,’ resonates with philos more closely than sibling love. It is how we treat those connected to us and interact with the world around us. Consider for a moment that babies are born with innate love for their mothers as well as fear and other impulses, but not hate directed at other life, which is learned later.
Synthesizing ideas across politics, culture, psychology, technology, art, and religion/mythology, I intend to share my philosophical vision for a unified global society, heavily influenced by the great American thinker Joseph Campbell. Through examining his genius findings that formed a philosophical basis for PostModernism, as well as the nature of our current, quickly changing world, I attempt to peek around the corner at what might come next. With a better understanding, we will make better choices. So, I intend to do my small part in helping us to clarify these questions — clearly frame the current philosophical conflicts we are engaged in as Humankind surrounding our use of tools & technology, power structures & governance, and our home, the Earth.
I am especially driven by anti-authoritarianism, expansion of freedoms and of consciousness, as well as reduction of suffering. All go hand in hand. I also like to have a good time (😉) and look out for my own charges, of course — it is the balancing of self and community interest that underlies most moral/philosophical dilemmas after all.
I hope Humankind chooses wisely in our conflicts. The alternatives to a reality based in rationality or loving-kindness are quite dark. The mature nature of our technological development means tyranny might soon entrench itself in ways difficult to overcome, locking in power for few at the expense of many, with potentially horrifying consequences for Humankind, as George Orwell warned in 1984.
If you have time, please start the journey with my oldest pieces and work your way to the present - this work intends to build upon itself.
Thanks for joining me on this ride and sharing some Philopita with me! The ancient Greeks shared their Philopita around symposia, with raucous drinking, sex, and partying — this text-based internet format is far more boring and isolated, but feel free to do whatever floats your boat while reading and commenting, lol. I hope I make it worth your while and please leave feedback, commentary, questions, and ideas, but please also lead with kindness, compassion, and mutual respect as I do my best to do also. That’s the whole stinkin’ point here. Cheers!
